One day the Lord Jesus sent his disciples to buy lunch while He set out to break some taboos. He went ahead and talked to a woman, and not just any woman, but a Samaritan one. This abominable act left his Jewish disciples utterly speechless for three reasons, namely;

  1. A Jew should have no dealings with a Samaritan.
  2. A man should not just talk to a woman at a well, unless he had intentions.
  3. A man of God, a rabbi, shouldn’t talk to any female in public, even his own relation

But the Lord was happy to break all these rules and He gladly told them so. In fact, He let them know that is the reason He came. To show that He was God of all flesh, whether they were from the wrong tribe, wrong side or just plain wrong – He came for them all. So in this one act, He taught deep truths, of which we will explore only three as follows;

  1. Those whom man discriminates, God accommodates. If man thinks of you as least-likely, God shortlists you as most-likely. In fact He bluntly states the last shall become the first and vice versa. The Samaritan went to fetch water when the other women were done, because she was not counted worthy of their company. God has this habit of turning-up when man has cast you down .This bad girl became the first Samaritan to receive the good gospel.
  2. b.       Don’t chose who is worthy of God; If man was to choose who to preach to in Samaria, he would have chosen a ‘decent’ woman. In the eyes of man she was too sinful to be saved. While man shortlists the most worthy candidates, God choses from the most unworthy prospects. He knows how hard it is to deal with someone who already thinks he is good. Jesus put it this way, those who are forgiven much, love much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” Luke 7:47
  3. Don’t decide who should work for God; When the Samaritan woman got saved, she left her water-pots at the well and rushed back to her town. There she shared her testimony with the ‘’men’’ of the town – the Bible need not explain why she went to the men, but we know that at least 6 women would have had nothing to do with her.  God saves you so that you can save others and He knows who will listen to you and who will not. The bad girl was chosen to become the first woman evangelist.

The disciples were used to Jesus talking to outcasts, but a female Samaritan abandoned even by her own!! Yet she brought revival in the most unlikely town because Jesus decided to break some taboos. What could happen if you decide to break some of your own?
